Karen Szala raises money for the DC Special Olympics

Karen Szala took the plunge! The polar plunge, that is. Karen raised $2,139 from friends, family and colleagues for the DC Special Olympics. Each year, she is surprised how many friends and colleagues tell her their own story of family members that have intellectual disabilities, and many of whom were Special Olympics athletes. This is Karen’s fourth polar plunge for the DC Special Olympics, and she participated in three for the New Jersey Special Olympics. There will be more polar plunges in Karen’s future, because this is a charity she loves…and she owns the polar bear costume!

The polar plunge is a very cool way for the community to come out and show their support for the DC Special Olympics. Held on Feb. 1, two above-ground swimming pools were erected at The Yards Park, and participants “took the plunge” to the cheers of the crowd! Check out more information about this event here.
